Count Downs

The title dictates that we are counting down something. I always liked that Billboard’s top 100 count-down. Some others are ok (such as top influential people of 2013) and some are truly morbid (people who died in 2013). However, when I am in the supermarket line and every cover has some kind of count down, I get really sick of count downs. So let's add one more list so we can be truly sated - My Top Nine Influences in 2013:

9.         Poetry Contests – so I barely entered any for 2013 but I made a note of deadlines and guidelines for poetry chapbook contests for 2014

8.         ART - After viewing Art (I can barely pass up a good artwalk such as Island City Art Walk, FATs Village or when Sailboat Bend is open to the public), I feel an surge from my eyes to my fingers and I must write. Also see post “Art Walk

7.         Other poets have inspired me such as those I have blogged about (Meryl, Linda,Anastasia, Monica, Richard) to those I have watched performed at venues (Emily, Ryan and CheChe)

6.         Food - my elixir and my problem; hence, my need to write and to exercise. See post “Onefor the Road” for elixir and any grumpy post and poem: ”The Torturer” in Tortured Souls for the problem

5.         A vacation that inspired. see post “ATreat for the Senses

4.         Learning about “prompts” at FWA conference (and eventually using them; see post on “PoetryChallenge”).

3.         Figuring out that my research on where to go read poetry should be shared on my blog (Poetry in News and Around Town).

2.         Reading poetry in Daytona then going to Sarasota for a PoetryLife event (see post “TheRoad from Daytona to Sarasota”) and seeing poet Naomi Shihab Nye (a poet herself) reading a WS Merwin poem for “Favorite Poet Reading” at a PoetryLife event in Sarasota.

1.         On the Road – after watching the movie, I planned my own road-trip and named my first blog post “On the Road

I want to know your top influences of 2013. Add to the comments below.

Poetry Challenge (deuxiéme partie)

So I continued the poetry challenge but I couldn't append to previous post without turning on my PC as iPad limit reached but I did tweet or email myself depending how awake I was that morning.
Recap: for 1 week, I will use word of the day from dictionary.com as a prompt and write a poem. Since Monday, I would wake up, look up the word of the day and write until 6:30 am before going to work. Friday was my birthday so I took off from work so no 6 am alarm to wake me but I still tried for the word of the day.
(Last post covered Monday and Tuesday, hence why I am starting with Wednesday)

It's my birthday, I'll cry if I want to...
Why start a challenge knowing it's my birthweek?

There

There

I let it all get to my head
Without focusing on the good
And solely focusing on the bad
Then I left it all behind.

In my ears was his chatter
About how it used to be
Constantly complaining
On how it is now
Yet he is still there.

In my eyes was her demeanor
About her mistreatment
Constantly complaining
But needs the benefits for here
So she is still there.

In my heart was their pain
About their sickness
Constantly complaining on getting sicker
Not sure if they can go elsewhere
They are still there.

I didn’t want to be one of them
Trapped with no chance of promotion
Constantly complaining, constantly getting sick
So I left it all behind
And I am no longer there.

Seasonal Sadness

Sorry Lana but I don't understand summertime sadness. Then again I do avoid the bikini clad beaches. Summer is long gone but sadness rather madness marks this season. It started right after Halloween, that's right, Christmas decorations were everywhere and pre-Black Friday activities abound. Some retailers were open on Thanksgiving Day luring shoppers with deals where shoppers rush off after gobbling their dinners, waiting in lines and rushing around the store to grab their deals (I hope the retail employees had a good meal before dealing with this crowd. Also, see some the backlash to shopping on Thanksgiving Day at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=557622844315156&set=a.495770773833697.1073741828.495680573842717&type=1&theater which has an image and succinctly states:"If you're shopping on Thanksgiving ... You're part of the problem."

It is a nasty circle where consumers via demand control the market but retailers discount the supply to lure the customer. It created Black Friday madness where retailers were opening at 5 am in prior years then last year few retailers opened ahead of a Black Friday on Thanksgiving at 8 pm and this year even more retailers opened on Thanksgiving. So what is the future of Thanksgiving? Well, according to pundits, the consumer is responsible.

So why my sadness? Two main reasons: I feel that Thanksgiving is slipping away and will be just another day open for sales like New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. As an immigrant, I didn't understand at first but later adapted Thanksgiving Day and had just begun to enjoy it with the family. My family has many people with different religious persuasions and some don't celebrate the Holy days. Thanksgiving is the only holiday where we can get together because it is not really linked to any major religion. My second reason: I have embarked on accepting seasonal employment in retail and have already seen some pretty bad behavior by shoppers reminiscing of "Jingle All the Way" and most movies of bad retail shoppers (too many to describe). Therefore, I suffer from seasonal sadness.

###

My poem for the week

Since I am suffering from seasonal sadness, I will share some poem therapy (a poem that is a bit of rhyme with a touch of silliness to lift the mood):

ILLNESS
Picasso is calling my name,
Shapes appear out of thin air.
First, a cube, a rhombus and then a square
Are dangling and swirling above my head.

Red, black, blue and white!
The colors are changing in my sight.
My eyes are blurry, my brain feels dead -
The shapes are dancing on the walls instead.

Each time I focus and when I move,
My head gets heavier and out of groove.
From neck down to my "itty-bitty" toes,
The pain throbs and continues to grow!

So what is your take on Thanksgiving: will it go away?

Hollywood Remakes? Yuk!

I was watching TV when this movie ad came on with Vince Vaughn and was taken aback: Delivery Man! I had watched a movie earlier this year called Starbuck which had the same premise of a man who had donated sperm and was the center of a lawsuit because the fertility clinic made a mistake and he was the father of over 500 children. Starbuck was a French Canadian movie, most dialogue was in French but it was subtitled in English. I guess Delivery Man is the Hollywood version (in English, of course).

Then I called The Dinner Game, another Hollywood remake of a French movie. I had watched the original in French Diner de Cons, it was hilarious and I couldn't see how Hollywood could make it better. Les Visiteurs another famous French comedy also suffered a Hollywood remake.  Yes, I really do detest Hollywood remakes of funny French comedies. So, what is the solution? Since people hate reading subtitles, the French should do like they do when American movies go to France.

A couple years ago, I studied in France and one evening while watching TV, I noticed that they dubbed over American shows.  For instance, I was watching Golden Girls and Blanche’s voice wasn't Rue McClanahan but compared to the other girls, she had a similar intonation but in French. So when French movies come to these United States, they could still leave the movie in French with English subtitles (for the Francophiles) but should consider dubbing the movie in English and stretch the appeal to a larger audience. I only named three movies that I watched but there are many more so France and Quebec, Canada listen up: dub your movies in English and stop the horrendous Hollywood remakes!

Art Walk

I was looking forward to it. When the sky was crying, I was crying. Then it stopped and I crossed my fingers and hoped they didn't call off the art walk. So many venues, so much art. They didn't! My favorite was the nature photographs and I am still thinking of getting the 2014 calendar. Take a look on the Facebook photos and let me know if you agree: https://www.facebook.com/RhettButlerPhotography
So I am glad that I could make it to the Island City Art Walk this past Friday. Next art walk is 3rd Friday of next month - that will be my birthday and not sure how I will celebrate yet but if/when you go, tell me your favorite art or artist.

Films, Shakespeare, poetry and music

“If music be the food of love, play on…” Duke’s speech in Act 1 of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare

Last Saturday night, I was volunteering at FLIFF and while speaking to some of the cast of “The Last Hit,” I recalled those lines from Shakespeare. Coincidentally, those lines appeared in a scene the next day in a film called “Chasing Shakespeare” when the father made a music room for his son. I had cold chills when I saw the words on a plaque above the converted barn. For me, William Shakespeare, although a playwright,  this soliloquy by the Duke is an indication of early poetry and music interplay.

More recently, Rolling Stones magazine highlighted Bob Dylan as poet and songwriter. How many other songwriters are also considered poets? Bob Marley, Jim Morrison, Lou Reed and Janis Joplin comes to mind but surprisingly, not many. Bon Jovi, Heart, Lauryn Hill and Jewel are excellent  examples of lyrics that may be poetry. When is a song so poetic? When is a poem so lyrical that it is a song?

In Full Swing Mode

It’s that time of year when conferences, festivals and other parties are bountiful. Last weekend, I attended the FWA Conference and took some interesting workshops. The workshops which were the most helpful (to me):
  • Let’s Write Prose! I found out how writing to a prompt can help. Mary K Swanson also gave some good feedback.
  • How to Structure Your Fiction – learnt a lot about character development from Janice Decker. I had to tweet afterwards an expression she used “Control is an illusion.” (If I wrote that preceding sentence awkwardly, I do apologize…maybe next workshop, I’ll get some tips on sentence construction).
  • The Fiction Con – Michael Wiley gave me a lot of ideas on book structure. I’m going for a hybrid approach: I’m laying out my chapters and thinking what the chapter should be about. I’m not exactly writing an outline but wants to follow that chart 1st plot, introduce 2nd plot etc.
  • Mincing, Chopping and Otherwise Processing Words – well I did buy some new software to help organize my writing. More importantly, Michael Carlson gave some great formatting tips which I can even use in my day job.

Therefore, my plan is to implement as much as possible to complete my novel for #ThreeBooksInThreeMonths.  My goal is only one novel and 5,000 words per week. I haven’t been meeting my word count yet but as mentioned above I’ve bought new software called Manuscript to assist me with organizing my flow.  Why such a low a goal, you may ask? I wanted an attainable goal (so I can have a sense of accomplishment) plus the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival is here. I frequently volunteer and also attend some shows. I’ve attended one so far, a delightful French comedy called Josephine Single & Fabulous. Some of my other picks are:
  • Italian Movies
  • The Last Hit
  • Broche Del Oro
  • Krissy Belle
  • BreakThrough

I picked these based on the synopsis and may add in some more. It's just that time of year and I want a piece of it all so I'm diving right in or as my titled aptly stated going in full swing mode.

October Already?

Time's a flying! It's October already. My writing this year has been blaise. I know that I spent time trying to be social (promote), go to poetry readings (promote) but haven't been writing much. I've missed some contest deadlines (and I keep telling myself "there's always next year"). Then there are upcoming conferences and events which has my interest. I heard Jamie talking about #ThreeBooksInThreeMonths and I decided then "I'm in" as this would inspire me to write. I set a goal of 5000 words per week and have some ideas in mind what I want to write (and finish):
A collection of short stories (this is the main focus for the 3 months) - started Tuesday by handwriting and typed last night - 347 words
Some essay - started last night because needed to write some stuff off my chest blocking main focus - 1966 words
current poetry project - I hope to finish by February next year (and then I will enter all the contests); I don't my verse being rushed, it can be terse but must develop to my liking like an inkling of me on paper so I take my time, I keep my eye on next year while remembering the deadlines past in this year.
So, thanks Angelique for letting me join in this journey!

Let's make it a date!

To FLIFF or not to FLIFF? That is the question? Well it shouldn’t be as this year’s FLIFF (Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival October 18 – November 11, 2013) boasts some of the poetry around town. Not just the prose that burns from the lips of men and women (actors on screen) but spoken word performers on film. Premiering at FLIFF is “Breakthrough” with spoken word poetry by Eden Wetherell. So poets, let catch this film on Saturday, November 9 at 7 pm at Cinema Paradiso (Fort Lauderdale). Let’s make it a date!

Back to Work

Have you ever just got back from vacation and wishing that you could go on another vacation? Well, I do! I also dream of winning the lottery...if only I would buy a ticket. So I start looking at the pictures and tell stories (some mine but most from the various tour guides from the excursions).

One last look of vacation past: sigh....

A Treat for the Senses

I just came back from vacation and wished it wouldn't end and by the amount I spent, I may never take another vacation again. All my senses got a treat: the scenery was a delight for the eyes, the sounds were a delight to the ear, unforgettable scents for the nose and savoring food for the mouth.

As for touch, I am glad that the bears were gathering berries in the mountains and we were not touched by bears. Considering the number of birds flying overhead, I was grateful none touched me with their poop. Also grateful to the porcupine that we saw some distance away for not coming over and touching us. So the lack of touch by any animal was the best treat for my sense of touch.

This week's poem is dedicated to my sense of  taste:

We were two traveling and touring
Seattle was definitely not boring

PAX convention and dressed up participants
Crowded the streets and restaurants

We trekked our way to The Metropole
We even saw the Borg through our window

While sipping on apple-tini
and the Metropole's own martini

The Pike Street Salad was refreshingly tasty
 with its zesty lemon vinaigrette

The tomato florentine soup had my cousin wishing
For their well executed recipe

Creole Prawns - we both ordered
In different but delicious dishes

The Polenta was so smooth and creamy
It topped the evening and we sent kudos to the chef
And toasted our evening at The Metropole.

Autumn Reads

"Poetry soothes the soul..." - The Collection, copyrighted 2013 Suzzette Dawes

I was reading and came across an opinion piece about best summer reads. I only read one of the books of the list. We are fast approaching Autumn, one of the most poetic seasons (at least in my mind) and I want to share some good poetry reads:

Throughout this winning chapbook, Meryl tells a story with her poems. In "Black and White," she not only tells the story of a photograph of a ballerina's slipper, she weaves in her memories of being a ballerina (lines 11-13), gives us a history lesson on Russian noblemen (lines 14-15) and protests the notion of women being the weaker sex (lines 38-41). Another one of my favorites is "Elegy with Backwards Clocks" as she finds Daylight Savings Time as fiction (I also share that belief). Short, leaving you wanting more poetry.

Meryl Stratford. Magician's Daughter. Ed. Gianna Russo. Yellow Jacket Press, 2013.

I had the pleasure of attending a workshop at Kerouac House in Orlando where Monica led the workshop. I recall her quiet demeanor then I read her poetry - the emotions she displays! "Howlish" the very title reminded me of beat poetry. I don't understand reviewer using "charming" to describe her work. It had a gritty, raw feel to me with remnants of beat poetry - prose poetry and some explicit language. The poems are arranged (into political, dreams, animal & cities and money & ghost) divisions. A jarring but good read.

Monica Wendel. No Apocalypse. Georgetown Review Press, 2013.

I like the way Linda create pictures with her words such as in "Janie's Life" (in the shape of a woman) and "An Engaging Proposal"(in the shape of a ring). Her artwork throughout adds to the words such as in "Sparkling Crystal." Then her other poems are crafts of words. I heard her read "The Ordinary Life of Amazing" and reading the print, I was amazed at the internal rhyme scheme. I found a favorite read in "Monday Mourning" which captures the pain of cubicle worklife. A witty, play on words.

Linda Eve Diamond. The Beauty of Listening. Aventine Press, 2013.

description here
Anastasia gives you imagery with her poems such as in "Jilted and Chardonnay" you can picture the people in the cocktail especially the people in the corner "love/slowly siphoned from/The pink skirts."  I have heard her read, been in her workshops and I am always enthralled on her wordmanship (spellcheck states not a word but that is how I would describe Anastasia.)

Anastasia Clark. Confetti Stampede. Ed. Christen Kincaid. Finishing Line Press, 2013.

the day of RECKONING

The Day of Reckoning is HERE!
Today is my monthly poetry reading! Other than that, I have made war with ants. It's the apocalypse, I suppose. Yes, those pesky pests that came out of nowhere and almost ruined a gift basket (with candy) that I was making. Okay, it probably is just another battle but I sense victory (plus I smell the chemical whoa). I’ve tried boric acid with its white powder sprinkled throughout my home (not a good look) but I still saw ants even trekking through the white powder. But today, I’m breathing in the chemicals whoa!  It's going to be a new age - an ants-free new age. Whoa.
What a name for a group – Imagine Dragons! I need to get that song out of my head so how about a poem about where I am hosting poetry today!

Why I Like Conferences?

If it wasn't for the money, I'd go to conferences all year round, meeting people, learning new tools in the industry and of course, the food...conference food is just yummy!

I have been writing since my teens. I found myself writing most when something was nagging at my mind so writing has been very therapeutic to me. I have done (and still currently doing poetry readings) where I can read my poetry to an audience. However, I craved for a wider audience (plus some people asked if I had a book) and I never understood publishing until I went to a conference: Florida Writer’s Association in 2010. The speakers were very informative especially about traditional publishing and self-publishing. I felt more connected to the self-publishing side because I wanted control especially with the cover art (plus there was this self evaluation). Since then I have embarked on my self-publishing adventure and I jumped in on the deep end: since I already understood formatting, I jumped in with lulu.com, Createspace and kindle direct. Once I have them printed, I found out there is so much more (aka marketing and social media); I haven’t noticed any large changes with my sales with my foray in social media. Then I look at other self-published authors and I find that I still have so much more to learn: finding editors, beta readers, reviewers (doing all the work that a traditional publisher would do for an author except that I got to do it myself), blog tours, cover reveal. I know it also depends on the genre which may take more effort. In my case, it is poetry and with all the dialogue in the media (such as: Can modern poetry be saved?), it can be difficult but I AM DETERMINED.
There is still so much to learn so I do look forward to attending conferences in the future and gaining new ideas and prospective.
