Seventieth Avenue
Seventieth Avenue

Seventieth Avenue is the poetry of road signs and directions in life.
These poems are based on the roads that connect us all. Inspiration started at the Kerouac House in Orlando to watching the movie "On The Road" and feeling inspired by some of the characters.
The characters triggered memories of my own journey from university to moving and living in New Jersey and having to come back home to Florida to my mother. Once in Florida, I embarked on an exploration by going to Daytona Beach and even partook in open mic night. It rained but I let the road lead me to Sarasota for Favorite Poetry Reading weekend.
Even my vacation in Alaska inspired poems when I saw the monument to Mollie in a Skagway park and thought of home in Florida where Natalie was murdered a few blocks from her residence. Also invoked inspiration of Marissa in trial in Florida for firing warning shots.
Poetry workshops especially those led by Anastasia Clark, Broward’s poet-in-residence were pivotal in providing some inspiration for some poems. The workshop at the Kerouac House led by Monica Wendel also inspired some poems. The ultimate inspiration is the name of the roads that connected me to my mother and sisters, Seventieth Avenue.

The Collection
The Collection

The Collection opens with “The Poet” which I wrote at the age of fifteen when immigrating to the United States. It captures some of my fears of change. This volume also contains "Ugly Girl," which I wrote during my second stint at the university 1997 to 2000; it captures another period of my life. The triggers vary causing the pen to strike the paper but a marked difference between the two is more melodrama in the latter.

Adventures in The Courtyard
Adventures in the Courtyard

This collection of poems, Adventures in the Courtyard, starts in the courtyard hosting poetry with the challenge of bringing new material to the readings monthly. The new material has been inspired from the movies shown on the big screen inside to exploring other poetry events. It is also an experiment in style: Free-flowing verse poet ventures in the world of form and explores villanelles, sestinas and pantoums. There are still plenty of free-flowing poems contained within its pages but the venture into forms produces a different flavor.
